The previous highest minimum in January recorded by the Bureau of Meteorology was 28.1 degrees on January 30, 2003.
On Wednesday morning residents had weathered 10 straight days of daytime temperatures above the January average of 33.1 degrees, with the hottest temperature of 42.4 degrees recorded last Friday. Cooler mornings last Sunday and Monday broke a similar run of morning temperatures above the January average of 18.1 degrees, including 23.1 degrees on Tuesday morning.
The bureau has predicted daytime temperatures of 33 degrees and below on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. By next Tuesday the top temperature will be back to 38 degrees. Minimum temperatures will range from 16 to 22 degrees. On Wednesday the city had received a total of 0.4 millimetres (mm) of rain since Christmas Eve but the bureau was forecasting up to 25 mm of rain on Friday.
