The most borrowed adult fiction book at Macquarie Regional Library’s branches in 2016 was James Patterson’s The Murder House. The crime fiction novel was borrowed 86 times.
It was followed by Paula Hawkins’ The Girl on the Train and Judy Nunn’s Spirits of the Ghan.
Macqaurie Regional Library’s Fiona Dunn said novels based on movies and Australian-themed stories had always been popular. People often wanted to read the book before the movie came out, Ms Dunn said, or they enjoyed the movie and followed up with the book, which drew a new audience into the library.
In the adult non-fiction titles, Guinness World Records 2016, Magda Szubanski’s autobiography Reckoning: A memoir and That Sugar Book by Damon Gameau were the most popular for the year.
Quitting sugar was a popular read, with three of Sarah Wilson’s I Quit Sugar books in the top six.
When it came to younger readers, Jeff Kinney and Andy Griffiths dominated the borrowing. Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School was borrowed 74 times, and seven of his novels were in the top 20 most borrowed.
Andy Griffiths’ The 39-storey Treehouse was not far behind on 72 borrows. He made the top 20 on eight separate occasions.
Library manager of services and collections Lindy Allan said the high figures showed kids still loved to read physical books.
Pig the Pug by Aaron Blabey was the biggest hit in the picture book category. Piranhas Don’t Eat Bananas and Pig the Winner by the same author were also highly popular, coming in at the third and fourth most read.
Ms Dunn said as well as the new books, old favourites such as Eric Hill’s Spot’s Favourite Shapes and Pamela Allen’s Mr McGee and the Perfect Nest were also much loved.
For the most popular DVDs, the selection was mixed, Ms Allan said. However, she said interestingly four out of the five top MA15+ movies were based on books: the two season one volumes of Outlander, Gone Girl and Before I Go To Sleep.
That Sugar Film was the most popular non-fiction movie, followed by Oranges and Sunshine.
Overall, Ms Allan said she was not surprised by the books and movies which had been borrowed the most throughout the year. She said those which had gather media attention like That Sugar Film and Magda Szubanski’s autobiography, and well-known authors, were expected to be popular.
