Eight-month-old Olivia Nestor was one of 543 girls born in 2016 to receive the name.
Oliver was the most popular boy’s name for the third year in a row, rounding out the perfect pair, the NSW Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages reports.
Despite the top ranking, her daughter is one-of-a-kind at mother’s group, which has no other Olivias, mum Anna Nestor reports.
But the Dubbo group has a baby Oliver, one of the 584 boys given the name in NSW.
Mrs Nestor said Olivia had always been her favourite, so she and husband Kody stuck with it.
“It’s a classic name, I don’t think it will date,” she said.
The preliminary list of top 100 baby names shows the latest trends across the state.
“Traditional names, popular 100 years ago, are back in fashion. However, names come and go in cycles between generations,” acting registrar of NSW Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages Alana Sheil said.
“Thirty years ago it was Joshua and Jessica, and their parents could have been Michael and Michelle. These days you’re more likely to be a Charlotte or Jack.”
New entries in the Top 10 NSW baby names are Lachlan and Leo, which edged out Isaac and Jacob. Girl’s names returning to the Top 10 are Isabella and Ruby holding back Sophia and Zoe from the short list.
“When you look to the meaning of names, Oliver and Olivia are often linked to peace,” Ms Sheil said.
“Whether you go with popular name trends or opt for something unique, remember your child will likely carry their name for life so it’s important to choose wisely.” Said Ms Sheil.
Parents have 60 days to register their newborn. Registration of your child’s birth is free in NSW and helps establish their legal identity in the community.
A final list of the top 100 baby names will be published on the registry’s website by April.
