The latest Bureau of Health Information (BHI) Hospital Quarterly reveals that the hospital met the state’s elective surgery on time target for urgent cases of 100 per cent of patients in 30 days in both the 2015 and 2016 quarters. The hospital improved its performance in the semi-urgent and non-urgent categories, exceeding respective targets of 97 per cent in 90 days and 97 per cent in 365 days by 1.8 per cent and 2.4 per cent.
The 1568 patients on the waiting list for surgery between July and September this year were 113 fewer than in the same period in 2015. Of the 1568 patients, 1367 were in the non-urgent category. The number of patients listed as not ready for surgery rose by 56 to 280.
BHI’s latest report suggests Dubbo Hospital’s multifaceted plan to get more people into surgery is paying off. A reported 158 patients with urinary tract problems were operated on at the hospital between July and September as compared with 73 in the same period in 2015. The more than 116 per cent jump in the number of patients from the same period in 2015 made urology a star performer within the category of elective surgery performed by specialty of surgeon in the three-month period.
More patients received surgery across its six major sub-categories, except for ear nose and throat surgery. The sub-category of general surgery managed an almost 30 per cent jump in patient numbers, from 201 in 2015 to 260 in 2016. The percentage of patients who received surgery on time ranged from 100 per cent for gynaecology and ophthamology to 98 per cent for urology.
The category of elective surgery performed by common procedure includes 12 major sub-categories including hip replacement. Twenty patients got new hips between July and September, representing an increase of almost 82 per cent or nine patients. Cystoscopy data almost doubled with 63 patients receiving surgery in the 2016 quarter compared with 32 in the same quarter of 2015. Only three of the sub-categories dealt with fewer patients including tonsillectomy and total knee replacement. The sub-category with the largest number of patients was cataract extraction with 109 operated on between July and September, four more than in the same period in 2015. Ten of the 12 sub-categories delivered surgery on time for 100 per cent of patients.
