The Duntryleague gun completed the clean sweep of Orange and Blayney’s 2016 Opens with a two-under, 36-hole score of 138 at the weekend’s Wentworth Open.
Payne tied with Cootamundra’s Brett Lange but, having played early in the day, had left the club and knowingly forfeited any possible play-off.
“It’s a bit disappointing to not get to play against him but I’m just really chuffed to get over the line,” Payne said.
After shooting a two-under 68 on Saturday, Payne had the overnight lead by one shot from Toomey.
Lange was one of three a shot back, and he shot 68 on Sunday to lead but Payne got things back to all square.
“Of the four, this one would probably rank the highest because I knew what I had to do with nine holes to go and went out there and got the job done,” Payne said.
