Much of it has been in relation to the boundaries which separate Group 11 and Group 10 and last week Country Rugby League (CRL) chief executive Terry Quinn stated his board needed to “look at the whole region; competitions and make-up for the whole region, not just teams jumping from one to the other.”
While admitting it is worth analysing, changing the structure of competitions too much may not be a positive, according to Western Rams senior representative coach Darren Jackson.
As someone who keeps a close eye on both the Group 11 and Group 10 competitions, as well as others such as the Castlereagh League, Jackson is as good as anyone to comment on the situation.
“I’m a bit of a traditionalist but things have changed,” he said.
“It was only 10 years ago Cobar was winning Group 11 and now they’ve been relegated back to the Barwon Darling League so it probably does (need to be looked at). Whichever way it goes and whatever happens there will be good and bad points.”
The matter is definitely going to be looked at by the CRL, with Quinn confirming last week a meeting will be held on February 14 to look at competition structures. That is another thing which will change the local landscape, following the Senior Country Championships going from an open to a purely under-23 tournament, something else Jackson was wary of.
“I first played for the Rams at 24 and Country at 25 so if this was around when I was playing I never would have played representative footy so I feel somewhat for them (players over 23) but I can see the merit.”
