Yadav's film has been nominated for best screenplay in this years awards.

To make it so far the film had to first pass through India's censors, which Yadav said was her biggest victory.

"We haven't had nudity in our films at all, for the longest time I don't think actors even kissed on screen," Yadav said.

"So my film has nudity, there are laws about using abusive language, so it really depends on the particular committee that sees your film and I think they are lenient when they see things in context."

Aside from some blurring in scenes India was able to see the movie in full, a rarity was such films.

"With Parched, the biggest question I was asked anywhere in the world (was) 'will India see the film that we saw?'," she said.

"The victory is that they will see exactly the same film, except that nudity was still not allowed."

Yadav said the film was received well but did not get a wide release due to the star-centric industry in India.

"We also had two very misfortunate (sic) things, one is that the film got leaked out online, which was very damaging to the film.

"Secondly what happened because of the the nude scenes, if you see it they're not even nude scenes, in one part of India the film was being sold as porn."

The idea started in Brisbane at a previous ASPA event; Yadav wanted to see more women like in films, women she could relate to.

"I was in discussion with one of the actresses in the film and we were hunting for something to do and she told me about conversations she had with women in this village where she was shooting a film," Yadav said.

"I found these conversations much more honest and unfiltered than we would have in the cities and I actually set out to make sex in the village."

As she travelled and had conversations with women around India the story took on more serious tones.

"With Parched, I think we hit a note which is very universal," she said.

"I remember when I wrote my first draft, I sent it to friends across the world and they wrote back more stories.

"I realised something that was happening so rooted in a village where there is no education and lack of information, had a resonance worldwide."

The film will come up against films from all over the world including Turkey, Russia and Australia.

It was judged by a panel of including British producer Lord David Puttnam and Australian actor and president of the academy Jack Thompson.

Thompson took his chance to talk up Australia's film industry and the importance support from the government for the industry.

"It's doing fantastically well, because when i started there wasn't an Australian film industry," Thompson said.

"The very fact that we have one, not only the fact that we have one, but we actually punch way above our weight.

"We have a population less than the city of Los Angeles and 18.3 per cent of all of the film makers working in Los Angeles are Australian.

"It's [government support] more timid than it was, but I think it comes and goes a bit, it's a bit seasonal like farming.

"They become very enthusiastic when they see the value of it."

The ASPAs begin on Thursday night and are a part of the Brisbane Asia Pacific Film Festival, which runs until December 4.

Most of the films nominated will screen over the festival.
