Raymond Smith’s champion Brad Hill Billy scored career win number 30 last week when winning his heat of the Mayor’s Cup (516m) at Dawson Park in the time of 29.88 seconds.
That was just a fraction faster than the 29.89 run by Nangar Bear, trained by Dennis Barnes, and the two headline Thursday’s $4605 final.
Nagar Bear has made a booming start to his career, scoring six wins and two places from 11 starts and will jump from box three in the final while Brad Hilly Billy, renowned as a slow starter, will jump from box eight.
Smith’s dog, with career earnings of more than $261,000, has been running over 600m more in recent starts but won over 520m at Wentworth Park five races back.
Nangar Bear, who fell in his last start prior to the heat, has also tasted success at the Sydney track in recent times.
In terms of other hopes in the race, Wellington trainer Ron Steel has Suzi Cargo jumping from box seven after finishing second to Brad Hilly Billy in the heats while Cicatriz ran the third fastest time of the heats when running home behind Nangar Bear last week.
Trained by Peter Carr, Cicatriz has 10 wins from 48 starts but hasted tasted success since scoring at Gunnedah on August 20.
The Mayor’s Cup Finjal (516m) is race seven of 11 at Dawson Park on Thursday and jumps at 2.47pm.
