Stronger Communities Fund
Last week I had the pleasure of handing out three prizes as a way of saying thanks for participating in the Stronger Communities Fund – Major Projects community survey. Congratulations to Lyndal Cooper who won a family season pass to the pool, Adam McKernan who received a family tour of Wellington Caves and Amanda Noke who won a double pass to the DRTCC season launch. Public feedback has closed on the major projects to be potentially funded by the Stronger Communities Fund.

Over 1,100 people nominated a top ten of priority projects from the 33 identified. The information from the community is being collated and will assist the Grant Assessment Panel in determining the allocation of the $9 million available. The intent of the funding is to kick start new development or major improvements that will have a significant social or economic benefit to the community. The allocation of funds will be announced in December.
Australia Day Awards
Nominations are now open for the 2017 Australia Day Awards and I encourage everyone in Dubbo and Wellington to nominate an outstanding citizen in their community. The region has no shortage of possible nominees with a number of residents having excelled in their chosen fields. What better way to give them a pat on the back than to honour and recognise them with a nomination for an Australia Day Award.
There are separate award categories for Dubbo and Wellington. For Dubbo the categories are: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year, Young Sportsperson of the Year, Services to Sports Award and Cultural Person of the Year.
In Wellington the award categories are Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Community Service or Achievement Award, Sportsperson of the Year, Junior Sportsperson of the Year and Community Event of Year. More information, selection criteria and nomination forms are available at www.dubbo.nsw.gov.au, Dubbo Regional Council Civic Administration Buildings at Dubbo and Wellington, Macquarie Regional Library, Western Plains Cultural Centre and the Dubbo Neighbourhood Centre. The winners will be awarded at the Australia Day celebrations at Victoria Park in Dubbo and Cameron Park in Wellington on 26 January 2017.
Financial Assistance Program
Time is running out for eligible community organisations to take advantage of Dubbo Regional Council’s Financial Assistance Program and apply for a share in $15,000.
Applications for the program close at 5.00pm on Friday 25 November 2016.
To be successful, applicants must meet criteria based on merit and benefits to the community and be based in the Dubbo Regional Council LGA or deliver a service or activity in the LGA.
The funding often provides a much-needed boost to help community groups complete a project or pay for resources that help them deliver valued activities and services to the people of Dubbo Regional Council LGA.”
If you are part of a not-for-profit organisation in Wellington, Dubbo or surrounding villages I encourage you to apply.
Successful applicants will be determined by Council at its meeting on Monday, 19 December 2016.
Evocities MTB Series
Well done to everyone who took part in the Dubbo leg of the Evocities MTB at Geurie at the weekend. Congratulations to the winners Shaun Lewis and Eliza Kwan who excelled in the warm conditions.
It was a terrific day at Geurie and the community really came together to create a great atmosphere for riders and spectators with the Dubbo Junior Rugby Club providing the catering with a fundraising sausage sizzle, while a band performed live music to entertain the crowd.
