The Dubbo Liberal from October 7 1930 contains mentions of both Ms Burt’s father’s cricket score and her uncle’s advertisement for firewood- a bargain at one pound per tonne.

The broadsheet would have spent about 50 years under the linoleum of her daughter’s house in Wingewarra Street, Ms Burt said.

“It was the done thing. These days you get a lining to go with the lino but they used newspapers,” she said.

“It’s a miracle. How it survived I don’t know.”

It was discovered by Ms Burt’s daughter and stored in a cupboard, but it wasn’t until recently when the newspaper was unearthed again that Ms Burt discovered the gem inside.

Her father Leslie Piper, who worked at the paper as a typesetter, is named on one of the pages alongside his cricket score.

In the equivalent to today’s classified section is Ms Burt’s uncle Roy Meredith selling firewood.

Ms Burt said her daughter most likely hadn’t opened the paper to see the family names inside.

The newspaper will likely be donated to either the library or museum to remain as part of Dubbo’s history, Ms Burt said.
