And yet Roses were elected the most favourite flower choice in Australia by one survey after another. There is no mystery; Roses have the capacity to make a grown man sigh. Talk about melting moments!
I’ve seen a tough bloke from a drought-stricken farm beyond the Black Stump take a sharp intake of trembling breath at first sight of ‘Double Delight’ Hybrid Tea with spicy fragrance, creamy-white petals edged with red. I didn’t blame him.
Why don’t you step back in time to historic Victoria Park opposite the railway station in Dubbo. Here the Rose Garden is shaped like a spread fan in multiple colour. There are 26 beds with a different variety in each.
Originally designed and constructed by garden supervisor Ian Tattersall back in the mid-1980’s under the management of Chris Vapiopolous, the Rose Garden points toward a memorial.
This is a tapering stone obelisk, a monolithic shaft with a pyramidal apex. The inscription concerns the royal visit on 10th February, 1954 when L.H.Ford was mayor.
The illustrious visitors were Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. The garden manager who got the park in order for this honour was Gordon Tyndall. The Roses could represent the residents of Dubbo dressed to the nines.
Periodically we replace tired Roses. The latest full-bed makeover is with ‘Jane Mc Grath,’ a blushing pink and cream floribunda with an amazing average of 14 stems with 14 buds each. They are tough, beautiful and will steal your heart in promotion of breast cancer awareness.
Stand out Roses are white ‘Pascalli,’ ‘Fragrant Plum,’ yellow ‘Sunblest,’ deep red ‘Ingrid Bergman,’ ‘Double Delight,’ orange-cream ‘Just Joey,’ ‘Olympic Gold,’ white ‘Peace,’ fragrant velvet-red ‘Mr. Lincoln,’ and busy ‘Ultimate Pink.’ Do visit Victoria Park. Rose blossom can lift your heart. ..
