These meetings are a great opportunity for clubs, organisations and individuals to have their say on the future of sport in their community. There have been some great outcomes including the adoption of the winter 2017 preseason training sporting ground usage allocations and very positive feedback on the Dubbo Regional Sports Council framework.
The meetings are held bi-monthly in Dubbo and Wellington and members of the public are invited. The council website has information on the next meetings. The great contributions to sport in Wellington and Dubbo will also be recognised at the annual Dubbo Sports Awards which will be presented at a special event on November 18 at the Dubbo RSL Theatrette from 6.30pm.
The awards go to the most talented sports people of 2016 and also celebrate the important people behind the scenes with categories including Dubbo Sports Awards, Individual or Team Achievement, Individual Contribution and Community Contribution.
The Dubbo Sports Council, the Federal Member for Parkes, Mr Mark Coulton MP, and the Federal Member for Calare, Mr Andrew Gee MP have worked together to make a great evening with special guest speaker Lisa Beehag who was a former Australian netball player and coach of the Sydney Swifts in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The continuing redevelopment of Rygate Park in Wellington is also great news for community sport.
The oval’s irrigation system has been replaced and there is new turf and lighting systems. In the future new toilets, change facilities and storage rooms will be installed.
Wonderful things happening at Wellington Caves Complex
Some big changes have been made with the first stage of the Wellington Caves Holiday Complex Master Plan getting closer to completion. At the complex 14 high-end cabins have been refurbished, the camping area upgraded and signage improved. There is also a new outdoor kitchen area beside the pool, a new barbecue area, shelter, tables and seating.
The statues of ancient animals which greet those who tour the caves have also had a new lease on life after being repaired and repainted by Tina Mansson from the Australia Museum.
Ms Mansson has worked as a preparator at the museum for 17 years and one of her first jobs was painting some of the megafauna statues that now reside at the caves. We were lucky to have her come back and work on the statues of diprotodon, wonambi and megalania.
These improvements at the Caves will showcase what a wonderful place the complex is and encourage more tourist to stop at Wellington and see that the town has so much to offer as a destination.
Congratulations to Noel Grimes
I would like to offer my congratulations to Wellington’s Noel Grimes who received a Commendation for Gallantry for fighting in the Battle of Long Tan during the Vietnam War. Mr Grimes received this recognition along with nine other soldiers at Government House last week, 50 years after the battle.
Remembrance Day
It was wonderful to see so many people come out to remember those who have fought for Australia on Remembrance Day last week. It was also pleasing to see so many young people at the ceremony and know that future generations will remember and honour those who have given their lives to secure Australia’s future.
