REAL ESTATE REFORMS TO BETTER PROTECT CONSUMERS
The NSW Government has released its Real Estate and Property Services Industry Reform Paper that aims to strengthen industry standards and better protect consumers. The paper outlines the Government’s vision for the state’s $15 billion real estate and property sector, with a strong focus on raising training standards, increasing transparency and accountability and strengthening trust account processes. The reforms focus on four key areas:
- 1. Improving entry standards and training requirements for the real estate and property industry;
- 2. Ensuring a greater level of professionalism among agents through enhanced continuing professional development (CPD) programs;
- 3. Increasing consumer protection measures through changes to trust account management and higher standards of accountability; and
- 4. Strengthening NSW Fair Trading’s powers to take action on rogue agents.
The reforms follow extensive public consultation and collaboration with industry stakeholders. Visit www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au. Submissions close December 5.
AWARDS FOR WOMEN
Local communities are encouraged to nominate female councillors and council staff for the 2017 Ministers’ Awards for Women in Local Government. The Awards recognise the outstanding contribution and achievements of women in local government in NSW. Amongst our local councils there are many talented and inspiring women who every day make a genuine difference to our local communities. I would encourage people to nominate a female councillor or council staff member who has made an outstanding contribution and deserves to be recognised for their commitment to the communities in which we live. The Awards recognise the achievements of women in metropolitan, regional and rural councils across four categories: Elected Representative, Senior Staff Member, Non-Senior Staff Member, and Women in Non-Traditional Roles. Nominations close on Wednesday, 21 December 2016. The Awards will be presented at a function to celebrate International Women’s Day at Parliament House on 7 March 2017. Further details of the categories and how to nominate are available on the Office of Local Government’s website at www.olg.nsw.gov.au.
