“I wanted my husband to send me a chair that was made in the 12th century and he said it was too hard,” Ms von Friedel-Klarenberg said.
“I picked up my courage and went to the gentleman carvers to learn. That was three years ago.”
The artist is one of 12 in the Fresh Arts exhibition ‘Wood’ on display at Ramien’s Timber Co Showroom until November 16.
Although she also creates art in other forms, Ms von Friedel-Klarenberg said she liked carving as it gave new life to a dead tree.
Her pieces, which each took around six weeks, are based on The Frog Prince.
“I like to surround myself with beautiful things and when you make them yourself it’s even better,” Ms von Friedel-Klarenberg said.
“I’m not interested in selling because they’re like my children.”
The artist said she used to live in Europe in a castle, and her background shone through in her carving style.
