And the former gun shearer will be hoping another road trip pays off when he launches a two-pronged attack on Monday’s $45,000 Coona Bowling Club Coonabarabran Cup (1600m).
Lightly-raced American-bred gelding Thought Worthy, to be ridden by Kody Nestor, heads the weights for the event with 61kg but has failed to beat a runner home in his past three starts.
The former Lloyd Williams-owned eight-year-old has only started on 15 occasions for three wins, but has amassed more than $300,000 in prizemoney thanks to good form in Europe that hasn’t been backed up in Australia.
Cavanough’s other chance is Steaknbearnaise, a seven-year-old who has also been in poor form but will be suited by a drop in weight and a rise in distance.
Coonamble Cup-winning hoop Peter Graham will take the ride.
Graham rode Can I Have to win the Coonamble feature, which beat home Brilliant Poet.
Punters have rallied behind the Leon Davies-trained gelding, making him a $2.40 favourite for Monday’s event.
Dar Lunn’s consistent mare Playing Game has also attracted support and is second favourite for the Cup at $2.80
