The book is based on the wreck of a luxury passenger ship in a cyclone off Port Hedland in 1912, only one month before the tragic sinking of the Titanic.
Kim writes about greed and fatal desire, as at the heart of the Jewel Sea lies a legendary cursed pearl.
This is Ms Kelly’s sixth book, but her first time in writing a story based on a legend.
She said she has always been interested in history, particularity Australian history.
“I’m a bit of a history junkie and I’m always looking for interesting things,” she said.
“I came across this real life story of the luxury ship that sunk and thought it’d be fascinating to write a story about.
“I really had so much fun writing this story."
This was Ms Kelly’s first time visiting the Dubbo Macquarie Regional Library.
