Played at Leichhardt Oval after Redfern won the hosting rights for this year’s knockout thanks to a memorable win in Dubbo the year before, the All Blacks made it back-to-back titles with a 40-12 win over Newcastle.
WAC’s bid for the 2016 crown was cut short in heartbreaking fashion, with the side’s 12-all draw with Combined Countries their last after the latter scored the first try of the final-eight contest.
The Walgett outfit, which includes Rose brothers George, Trent and Matt, made the quarter-finals after victories against Central Coast United, Wollumbin Warriors and an opening round, 26-6 triumph against Waterloo New Generation.
Aboriginal people from across the state have been competing in the tournament, in teams from their homelands, since the first knockout in 1971.
