WHEN Jess Prior found an opening down the sprint lane there was going to be no stopping Arcachon from taking out Monday’s Tab.com.au Consolation (2,260 metres) at Bathurst Paceway.

Trained by Eugowra’s Grant Jones, Arcachon ($21.80) was superb over the final 200m as the four-year-old mare’s run home along the pegs saw her beat Folk Art ($11.30, neck) and Crusty ($6.90, 7.2m) to the line.
Arcachon had sat well poised behind leader Regal Ashes for the entire race and when the sprint lane opened up Prior didn’t miss a beat.
It’s the second career win for the Mister Big x Arks Crystal mare.
Nathan Turnbull on Folk Art had plenty to give in the final 100m but had too much ground left to make up as he was forced to settle for second.
Favourite Alpha Styx ($3.10) was caught three wide for the entire final lap and didn’t have the energy to contest the finish.
“I was just hoping the leader wouldn’t hand up, then I wouldn’t get the sprint lane, but I knew once he was in front he wasn’t going to hand up,” Prior said.
The victory on Arcachon completed a winning double for Prior who also took out the day’s opening race on Swaggie Shannon.
“It’s unreal. It feels like I haven’t had a win for a long time and then I get up to drive two winners today,” Prior said.
The meeting at Bathurst was held to fill the gap left by the Canola Cup, which had to be cancelled after heavy and consistent rain made a mess of the Eugowra Showground, and floods impacted the wider region.
