Daniel Vincent Homan, 24, of Bligh Street, Oberon appeared in Bathurst Local Court on Monday.
The court heard about 9pm on January 23, Homan - along with a co-accused - allegedly stole 55 sheets of roofing iron belonging to St Barnabas’ Church.
Straps holding the sheets were cut and a cap on top was moved. The court heard Homan cut himself, leaving blood which was later confirmed as his using DNA profiling.
Homan and the co-accused allegedly left, but shortly after a trailer tyre blew under the weight. The noise prompted a man in a nearby house to have a look. They drove off. When interviewed by police, both denied any involvement in the theft.
