As well as taking part in a number of school visits, the duo cast their eye over some of the region’s best young talents at the girl’s Western Region PSSA trials at Sportsworld while they also had a community meet and greet at Barden Park on Thursday evening.
Both the Blues were delighted to get involved in the local community and Sandhu said the ultimate goal was to inspire youngsters to go on and wear the green and gold.
“I think its really beneficial,” he said.
“Hopefully we can find the next Don Bradman or the next Glen McGrath or Henry Lawson. But it’s cool for the kids to meet us and for us to meet them and pass on some tips and get them involved in cricket.”
Cricket NSW has made country areas a real point of focus in recent times, largely because so many past and present Blues started playing in the bush.
Somerville pointed to the likes of Glen McGrath, Nathan Lyon and Chris Tremain as players who have made the move from country areas and added he was hopeful he and the likes of Sandhu could inspire others to take the same journey.
“It’s certainly a big part of Cricket NSW’s plans and it’s great to come out here and promote it to the younger kids and get them involved in the game like we were when we were young kids,” he said.
Recent participation statistics revealed cricket is now the most played sport in Australia and both Sandhu and Somerville were proud of that fact.
“It comes form the hard the Sydney Thunder do, Cricket NSW do and Cricket Australia does and that work behind the scenes,” Sandhu said.
“That gets kids involved in things like the Milo T20 blast and it’s really good to see and hopefully we can keep finding good talent.”
While youngsters benefited during the day, there was a real mix of players at the meet and greet, where the two Blues spoke of what it’s like to play at the elite level.
