Catalyst for the book was West Australian Linda Livingstone whose husband “rolled his eyes and died" in Dubbo.
Workers on the Wallaby--A swag full of stories is already attracting interest from far-away communities mentioned in it.
The 11 stories in the book are penned by the travellers with Mr Brebner providing an introduction for each of them.
Mr Brebner reports that the three-year exercise of gathering and compiling stories and 320 photos was prompted by the reaction of Workabout Australia Club members to Mrs Livingstone’s loss of husband Howard.
The 72-year-old author told how the couple from Perth had towed their caravan to NSW after he secured work for them at Fletcher’s International Exports.
But while free camping at Cobar, Mr Livingstone fell and broke his hip.
“He was airlifted to Dubbo and was recovering beautifully when he complained of chest pains and was taken to Orange for an angiogram,” Mr Brebner writes in his new book.
“The next day back in Dubbo Hospital and as Linda was visiting him he rolled his eyes and died.”
Mr Brebner reports that after Mr Livingstone was cremated, his widow put his ashes on the backseat of their car and headed back to Western Australia.
“She set off all alone having never towed the caravan before except from Cobar to Dubbo,” he writes.
Linda’s Journey is “inspirational” according to Mr Brebner who with wife Colleen still entertains travellers they met before selling Workabout Australia.
Other stories in the book include Road to a Dream by single mum of grown-up daughters Kim Charters who reports of finding “love and God”.
Finding a Slice of Heaven is Chrissy and Gunna Schley’s account of being directed by Workabout Australia to Batlow where they remain after 10 years.
The new book is at local newsagencies, the Visitor Information Centre and the Book Connection.
