The 2016 Dubbo Sustainable City Expo and Science Festival was held at the Western Plains Cultural Centre on Saturday.

The showcased a range of services, from the OEC Community Garden who were showing of their produce to the Age of Fishes Museum which had a hands-on exhibit.

Western Plains Regional Council sustainability coordinator Catriona Jennings said more than 950 people attended the festival.

“This year, the 11th annual event, was even bigger and better as it joined forces with over 40 businesses and organisations to provide a number of new and exciting activities and displays,” Ms Jennings said.

“The event provides a fantastic opportunity for the community: to better understand local global and environmental issues, to find out how science can play a central role in tackling these issues, and to discover possible actions and ideas to reduce our impact on the environment.”

With the NSW Government ending the Solar Bonus Scheme at the end of the year, Ms Jennings said the future of solar was high on the agenda, with many people attending the expo to find out how they could get the best of their solar system.

It wasn’t only about the service providers.

Ms Jennings said other highlights included the opportunity to get up close with native Australian animals from Taronga Western Plains Zoo, and Fizzics Education’s ‘Go Green Science Show’ which demonstrated ways to be sustainable at work, school and home through a range of experiments.

“Our event would not be possible without partnerships, and council would like to kindly thank all the exhibitors who donated their time, and for assisting our community to become more sustainable and a great place to live,” Ms Jennings said.

For those who missed the expo, council would have a stall at the Aboriginal Housing Office’s Festival of Energy on September 2 at the Dubbo Showground.
