The government’s FuelCheck website and accompanying app from the NRMA allows motorists to get live price data.
As of yesterday afternoon, the two Caltex outlets on Cobra Street and Windsor Parade and the Woolworths station at Orana Mall (which is also Caltex) were the cheapest for E10, charging 113.5 cents a litre.
Earlier in the day, the Woolworths store had been charging 113.4 cents.
At the other end of the scale, the two BP service stations were charging 115.9 cents, 2.4 cents a litre more expensive.
Interestingly, all Caltex branded fuel was the same across the city, likewise for United, Coles Express and BP outlets.
NRMA president Kyle Loader and Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Victor Dominello both called FuelCheck and the app a “game changer”.
Mr Loader said not only would people be able to easily find the cheapest fuel in the city, but it could also help to drive prices down.
“For too long people in Western NSW have been forced to live with high fuel prices and had no option but to drive around if they wanted to compare prices.
“Now they can check every service station in one place in real time. And if they are travelling from one town to another, they can compare the two and find where is best to fill up.
“There is nothing more frustrating than filling up in Dubbo, only to find fuel is cheaper in Wellington as you drive through.”
Mr Dominello said service stations were legally required to update their prices with FuelCheck within 15 minutes of changing the price at the bowser. Motorists are being encouraged to report non-complying stations and also provide feedback on the website.
“FuelCheck is the first of its kind in Australia and will deliver a better deal for motorists by boosting competition and transparency in the fuel sector,” Mr Dominello said.
