Thanks to some great patches of play – both at the start of the opening half and in the middle of the second term – they did just that.
Unfortunately for the students some easy tries for the Bulldogs from close range, in both halves of the match, put the game beyond their grasp and lead to a 42-17 loss.
“We had a really good start but had a really loose period of 20-odd minutes where we gifted them 26 points or so and that was the ball game,” McIntosh said.
“With a bit of luck in the second half and a held ball here or there it could have been a totally different score board.”
Bulldogs scored off a chargedown in the first half and CSU almost managed to respond with an identical play in the second term but their chasers were beaten to the ball.
A dropped ball during a right side overlap just moments later also hurt CSU who continued to show plenty of fight.
“At 35-17 I thought we were right in that game. They would have been looking over the shoulders but we didn’t quite get there,” McIntosh said.
“I’m very proud of my boys. They put a lot in and they had a go.”
