Yesterday saw the launch of the Artlands Conference and Festival 2016 at the Church Street Rotunda, which is expected to have a major economic impact as well as promote Dubbo as a vibrant City rich in culture.
Organisers are expecting 1000 people at the event in October. Hosting the Artlands Festival allows Dubbo to showcase the many fine arts facilities and cultural venues on offer.
There will be a number of free events throughout the festival that are sure to appeal to many. Check out what’s on at artlands.com.au
Unveiling of events
Last night the 2016/2017 City Development Partnership Program was launched at the Western Plains Cultural Centre with the unveiling of the Dubbo and Great Western Plains Visitors Guide, Dubbo Events Guide and the City’s New Resident Guide. These guides showcase the City’s visitor, event and new resident and are the result of a collaboration between council and industry.
Friday, August 19 2016 marks the 199th anniversary of John Oxley descending upon the Wellington Valley and proclaiming the area as Wellington.
It will also mark the official launch of the town’s bicentenary celebrations with events planned to be held throughout 2017.
The launch would include the official unveiling of the Wellington Bicentenary logo as well as an overview on some planned events.
Other events including a beer can regatta, bicentenary day, which will be held exactly one year from Friday and a special commemorative dinner on the Duke of Wellington Bridge. All welcome.
Pets Month
This Sunday, as part of Pets Month, there is a fun, pet-friendly afternoon with discounted vaccinations and microchipping available, information stalls, a dress up competition, children’s entertainment and a BBQ at Ollie Robbins Oval from 12noon. So bring the family, join in the fun.
Science Week
It’s National Science Week, and the Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC) is set to host the 2016 Dubbo Sustainable City Expo and Science Festival on Saturday, August 27 from 10am-2pm.
The Expo and Science Festival will enable the community to discover how to live and work more sustainably and explore the central role of science in achieving a sustainable future.
There will be 40 exhibitor displays, including a range of sustainable living exhibits, tips on how to reduce household energy, water bills, create less waste, and live in harmony with the environment.
Ordinary Meeting
The next Ordinary meeting of Council will be held August 24 in Wellington. I will be formally recommending a change of name to Dubbo Regional Council.
This has come off the back of research conducted that revealed less than 40% of respondents surveyed were happy with the name Western Plains Regional Council.
As when Macquarie Shire and Wellington Municipal Council amalgamated in 1950 and when Dubbo and Talbragar Shire Councils amalgamated in 1980, success depends on the relationship and cooperation of the new Council’s main commercial centres.
Therefore, the name Dubbo Regional Council is an appropriate name for a new unified Council. It is the name for the organisation, not a destination, and Council will remain committed to promoting the unique tourist attractions of both locations.
Applications for the Stronger Communities Grants close August 19, don’t miss the deadline.
