Mudgee local and NSWIS rider Ayden Toovey, who finished second in the coveted Cliff Hazell Memorial Wheelrace at the Dubbo Track Open in February, was the winner of the event, which saw a number of the state’s strongest National Road Series riders and teams take on the event.
Ben Hill (Attaque Team Gusto) finished second, with former Dubbo rider Tim Harris (Oliver’s Real Food Development Squad) finishing third ahead of John Peppard (Eastern Suburbs Cycling Club) in fourth and Jacob Kauffmann (NSWIS) in fifth.
Attaque Team Gusto rider Ben Hill was the victor of the 80km Division 1 Oatley Scratch race on Sunday, with Sam Hill (GPM Stulz), Jacob Kauffmann (NSWIS), Stuart Shaw (NSWIS) and Peter Milostic (former Tram Budget Forklifts) rounding out the top five.
Mudgee’s Joel Burke, who regularly contests Dubbo Cycle Club road and track events, took out the Oatley Division 280km scratch race.
Dubbo Cycle Club riders David Gerrish, Tim Hines, Chris Couper and Mike Ticehurst were competitive in a strong Division 380km event, which saw both Couper and Ticehurst take out King of the Mountain classification prizes for being the first riders over the KOM climb.
Current world women’s 3000m individual pursuit champion and recent reserve rider for the Australian women’s Olympic team pursuit squad Rebecca Wiasak was the highest placed female rider in Saturday’s Mark Dwyer handicap and she was dominant in winning the women’s Oatley Scratch race ahead of a strong field of riders that included NSWIS rider Laura Jones (second) and Bathurst’s Stacey Fish (fifth), both of which contested the Dubbo Track Open in February this year.
Canberra-based Wiasak also rides for the women’s continental team High 5 Dream Team, which is a development squad for Australia’s up and coming female riders and women’s track endurance riders, including current Australian Olympic team pursuit member, Georgia Baker.
Round 14 of the Dubbo City Toyota Road Racing Series continues this Saturday, with riders taking on a 38km handicap race on the flat Mogriguy Road course for what will be the penultimate round of the road calendar.
Junior riders Luke Ensor, Brodie Wheeler, Danny Barber, Dylan and Kurt Eather and Haylee, Zara, Zac, Imogen and Makayla Fuller will travel to Wagga for the NSW Junior Road Championships on Saturday and Sunday to contest the individual time trial, criterium and road race over the two days.
Brothers Kurt and Dylan Eather have been very impressive so far this season in the under-17 and under-15 junior tours, while Haylee Fuller has been regular podium filler in the under-15 girls division, with all three riders competing as first year riders in their respective grades against older riders.
Zara Fuller continues to improve in the under-13 girls division and has topped the podium in a number of the recent junior tours, while Luke Ensor, Danny Barber and Zac Fuller, along with twin sisters Imogen and Makayla Fuller are all showing strong form this season.
