Police have warned residents in Western NSW to safeguard firearms, which have become a commodity for thieves to sell and trade.

“The risk we see around it is these firearms do fall into the wrong hands and then are used in the commission of other offences or crime,” NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Geoff McKechnie said.
“We see a number of firearm thefts in the region and we urge people to safeguard their firearms properly and use the appropriate safety.
“But there are groups of people, often organised, stealing firearms and trading them in many ways,’’ he said.
Police seized stolen firearms from three Wellington addresses this week.
He said despite a spate of thefts there was no cause for alarm.
“It is a problem for us. Over the last couple of years in this part of the world firearms are seen as a currency and they can be traded readily. We suspect that’s why a lot of thieves target firearms when they break into. places,’’ he said.
