Capital Airport Group was named the overall winner and also won the medium business award at a black-tie event at the National Gallery of Australia on Tuesday night.

Fyshwick-based iSimulate, which develops medical simulation technology, won the micro-business award, while Relkin Engineering was named best new business.

The Rehabilitation Specialists, which aims to help clients return to work, was named small business of the year for its services helping clients return to work.

This year's charity award went to Ronald McDonald House Canberra, which provides a home away from home for families going through childhood illness at the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children.

The house features 11 guestrooms for families of children undergoing medical treatment and has cared for more than 1000 families since it opened in 2012.

Capital Airport Group managing director Stephen Byron said he was proud of the business' significant impact on the community.

"More than 12,000 people currently work at the airport precinct across 280 businesses, making a major contribution to the local and national economy," he said.

Commercial pilot and former property developer acquired Canberra Airport in 1998 with a vision to create an aviation gateway worthy of the nation's capital.

The group has since invested $2 billion redeveloping the site, which includes office, retail and accommodation space.

Nearly three million domestic passengers travel through Canberra Airport each year and that figure is expected to double in the next decade.

The airport's services will expand further as the first international flights from Canberra to Singapore and Wellington start later this year.

Telstra Business Awards ambassador Andy Ellis praised Capital Airport Group as a "tangible success story" for the Canberra region which had brought broader business opportunities to the community.

"Capital Airport Group has a long-term business model, demonstrating growth and complexity and resilience."

said the winners demonstrated innovation, competitiveness and strong financial performance.
