About one half of the rock ramp and fishway has been constructed at the weir, Western Plains Regional Council director technical services Stewart McLeod said, however he said the second half could not continue until the water levels receded.

“I’m hoping it’ll be just another few days because there hasn’t been any more water for the last few days,” Mr McLeod said.

“We’ve lost a couple of months but it remains to be seen how much more we’ll lose. We have to wait and see at the moment.”

As well as preventing the machinery accessing the site due to the potential to get bogged and blocking the temporary access road, the high water flow also eroded part of the river bank.

However, while the water did affect the construction, Mr McLeod said it was also a good test to see how the weir performed, and it was clear the rock ramp and wishway were achieving the desired result.
