Just days after statistics revealed the city as the third-highest offending area for drivers not being restrained, further figures show we’re also in the top five for ‘blowing the bag’.
In the recently-ended financial year, there were 136 drink-driving offences recorded in the city, ranking it behind only Byron Bay (185), Coffs Harbour (160) and Port Macquarie (154) statewide.
The top 10 locations were all regional areas, highlighting drink-driving as a major issue for officers patrolling the bush.
Across the state though, the overall figure was down.
Police conducted more than six million random breath tests in the year ending June 30, resulting in 18,563 charges being laid.
“We remain concerned that some drivers continue to think it is acceptable to get behind the wheel after drinking, and we will continue to target them for the safety of all road users,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith said.
