A live Play School concert at Dubbo on Monday took place on the golden anniversary of the first episode going to air.
The Sawley family travelled from Merriwa to Dubbo for the event and brought with them a tribute to the show.
Joshua and Jacob Sawley and mum Talitha were inspired to make a card and gave it to Play School presenters Alex Papps and Michelle Lim Davidson after the concert.
Joshua, 3, and Jacob, 1, were awed to come up close to enduring favourites Big Ted, Little Ted and Jemima.
“We went to the local newsagents and bought some craft supplies and made a 50th birthday card to give to Play School today,” Mrs Sawley said.
“We had a fantastic time at the show.
“The highlight was probably Humpty Dumpty for Jakey and probably Big Ted and Little Ted for Joshie.”
The long-running show has generations of fans, with Mrs Sawley recalling watching it in younger days.
“I think I’m as excited as the boys were,” she said.
“I can clearly remember it and I just thought it would be nice to get them to meet them in person.”
Presenter Alex said it was lovely to be able to share the special day with the audience and get them involved as well.
“I think it’s managed to maintain its values over the years and I think people recognise that, clearly it’s entertaining and fun for kids to sit in front of for half an hour,” he said.
“But people know their children are going to be exposed to some fundamental sound values around cooperation and inclusion and kindness and while exploring their creativity and imagination and their sense of self.”
Michelle said they wanted to thank everyone who had come to the 50th birthday concert.
“Everyone’s grown up with (Play School), and there’s a lot of trust there in place and I think that’s something that’s been earned over the years,” she said.
