Parramatta Eels legend Hindmarsh was the special guest at Caltex Park and was on hand to see St Mary’s Dubbo win the Richardson Cup while Cowra’s Mulyan Public School won the prestigious Peachey Shield.
Hindmarsh was particularly pleased with the brand of football the Mulyan side played but said each and every side performed well.
“It was a great day and one of the many of the shields they play for, this being Peachey and Richardson, but there’s the Andrew Ryan Cup and others in this region and they’re all great days,” he said.
St Mary’s once again proved itself as an outstanding developer of sporting talent with a hugely impressive run in the Richardson Cup.
In the final they came up against St Matthew’s from Mudgee, coached by former Dubbo local Justin Yeo.
The Dubbo side proved far too strong in the decider and won 24-12 off the back of a man of the match display from Darby Haycock and two tries from Naite Wilson.
“They had a bit of fun and that’s what it’s more about,” coach Bernard Wilson said.
“There’s some good kids with a bit of a future in front of them but they’re only young and it’s only early days.”
In the decider, St Mary’s started the better and scored two quick tries through Wilson and an individual effort from Jock Pilon.
Kaden Williams scored again just after half time before St Matthew’s finally hit back through Jack Nicholas.
Further tries to St Mary’s youngsters Haycock, Jodan Porter and Wilson’s second sealed the result.
As his side celebrated with their team song, the winning coach took some time to praise the entire day.
“They’re fantastic for the region and to get them all together for a day is something we probably need to do more of, even in the weekend footy, so it’s fantastic,” Wilson said.
Mulyan Public won the Peachey Shield 16-8 and the Cowra school will now travel to Sydney on August 24 for the Legends Sheild Finals Day.
