Students, staff and parents witnessed the emu outside St Augustine’s Catholic School shortly after 8.30am.
Narromine Shire Council was called to move the emu.
General manager, Greg Lamont said council took the job on board despite it being outside their jurisdiction.
“Our involvement in this has bee limited apart from herding the ‘home reared human friendly’ emu to the back of the Industrial Estate recently,” he said.
“On checking today the emu is not there, we think it may have wandered down behind the orchards adjacent to Crossley Drive via a laneway to the River behind the orchard, unless someone else came and got her.”
Mr Lamont said the council staff had an interesting day trying to locate the emu’s owner and get her out of danger of traffic.
“Generally with native animals we get involved to protect the public and the staff always go out of their way to do this. It is obvious the way the emu reacted it has been hand reared, she can be patted and will follow you...surely someone out there is missing a pet emu,” he said.
“Our staff managed to coerce the emu out of town and into wide open spaces and get bogged doing it.”
Reports have also been made that an emu was spotted around town over the weekend, although it is not confirmed whether these emus are the same.
The Narromine News and Trangie Advocate posted a photo of the emu down the central business district on Wednesday morning, much to many social media users’ delight.
