I write to let your readers know that there are now 288,000 people in Australia who are deafblind.
It is predicted that by 2050, there will be one million Australians who have no hearing and sight.
The whole point of Deafblind Awareness Week - which runs across Australia from 24th to 30th June, 2016 – is to specifically help deafblind people and raise much needed awareness about the issues this important and growing community faces.
We are specifically asking readers in your area to consider holding an “Able Morning Tea” any time in June or July … and then donate the funds to deafblindness.
All monies raised will help support Australia’s growing deafblind community.
Obviously, a simple fun gathering at work, school, home or in a community group is a terrific way to spend some enjoyable time having fun together … whilst raising much needed funds for a great cause.
I love the idea of people getting together and sharing some laughter and good times to help others less fortunate.
The fact is that even small donations really will make an absolute world of difference.
For instance, just $15 will allow one person to go rock climbing for an afternoon during a deafblind camp and $80 can give two people the opportunity to try surfing and experience the motion of water. Every single dollar makes a difference.
I am very honoured to be an ambassador for Able Australia. It is the leading not-for-profit disability service provider for people living with multiple disabilities and deafblindness.
I have seen first-hand the fantastic work Able Australia does and I urge everyone to get involved, hold a morning tea and have some fun whilst helping others.
Able Australia has been helping the deafblind community for nearly 50 years.
Just go to ablemorningtea.com.au for more information, or email fundraising@ableaustralia.com.au.
Yours sincerely,
Duncan Armstrong, OAM
Ambassador,
Able Australia.
