It has asked the public to avoid using the section of the trail through Regand Park to the lower end of Tamworth Street.
The closure is a safety precaution following washouts of the river bank near the South Dubbo Weir due to high river flows.
The council is waiting on further advice from Public Works and David Payne Constructions before assessing the impact on the construction on the South Dubbo Weir Rock Ramp and Fishway.
Council of technical services director Stewart McLeod said the water level is dropping which may slow any further undercutting.
“Until the water drops and inspections can be conducted the impact on the construction works and the extent of the washout can not be fully determined,” Mr McLeod said.
“Council has erred on the side of caution but is asking the public to avoid the area,” he said.
