The trio along will hit the red carpet on July 7 at Hoyts Entertainment Quarter in Sydney to launch the 13th instalment of the cult series on the big screen. Pine (Captain Kirk), Quinto (Commander Spock) and Urban (Leonard McCoy) last visited Australia in 2013 for Star Trek Into Darkness, which reaped $US467 million ($634 million) at the global box-office.

Also along for the ride will be director Justin Lin, who takes over the reins from JJ Abrams, who was otherwise occupied with directing Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Star Trek Beyond is released to tie-in with the 50th anniversary of the cult series, created by Gene Roddenberry in 1966.

The latest instalment also stars Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba and Simon Pegg, who co-wrote the script.

The story follows the crew as they get stranded on an unknown planet after being attacked by aliens. Pegg said the film aims to appeal to old fans and a new audience.

"There will be things in there for every Star Trek fan," he told Nerdist. "It is the same world, and so some of the points of reference will be the same. But they are off in a part of the galaxy that they've never been before. They're far away from the usual suspects I think. As such it's not like they're meeting up with an old adversary or someone they've met before.

"I felt like now it was time to move away from the [Kirk-Spock] bromance thing and concentrate on the idea of the crew as a family living in a small space together, and what it means to all of them."

Star Trek Beyond is out July 21.
