But winning a tournament while paying tribute to a dear friend is even more memorable.
That was the case at Dubbo City Bowling Club over the long weekend as the team of Max Lowe, Nathan Collis and Josh Andriske took out the annual Jack Nolan Triples tournament.
The team was playing for Henry Gordon, a much-loved local and former Zone 4 bowls champion who passed away last month.
"It was a great win, we played for Henry Gordon and it was just a great team effort and I think Henry was looking over us," an emotional Lowe said.
Lowe and Andriske, who skippered the triumphant team, had played with Gordon in the past and this year Collis joined them.
He fit in seamlessly and despite the three players starting a bit slowly on Saturday, they kept winning right through to Monday morning.
"We had a good team but started shaky," he said.
"Our first two games we only won by one shot on the last end both times but then we came together in the third game and it was really good.
"We just picked up from there."
On Monday morning the eventual champions defeated the team of Lindsay Burton, Mick Rae and Craig Jeffries.
The Jack Nolan Triples is one of the richest tournaments around and the winning trio collected $3000.
Lowe said each player, who came from three different local clubs, played their part.
"Playing with Josh, he's a very good player and a very good skip," he said, before laughing about his teammate's demeanour.
"You don't know whether he's cranky or not because he's mean and never changes.
"And Nathan played very well but he's not much like Henry, he'll have to dye a lot more white.
"But he fit in well, is a great player and a good fella."
Lowe again touched on the late Gordon, saying he and Andriske in particular were determined to win this event and the victory was a "special" one.
Lowe was also one of a host of bowlers to praise the Dubbo City Bowling Clubs.
Numbers for the tournament were again strong, as was the quality on the greens.
Players came from as far as Sydney and the Central Coast to take part and the club's bowls manager, Tony Scott, was delighted by the turnout.
"Exceptional standard of play," he said.
"The greens are in really good condition. Our three greens here and our greenskeepers did a really good job, so our surfaces here are right up there with some of the best, and I've been all over the world playing bowls and they're right up there with some of the best I've ever played on."
Scott added it was an exciting time for the club, with all the action now building up towards the Western Plains Open on the October long weekend.
