Last week it was announced if the Coalition was re-elected at the upcoming federal election, a $25 million federal contribution would be made towards the construction of an integrated cancer centre for western NSW.

Ms Stewart said Labor would not make the same promise.

"It would be a disservice to the Dubbo community to provide an oncology unit when there are so many other glaring problems in the health system," she said.

"The thing that I most want to do at this point in time is to sit down with Dubbo Base Hospital staff and work out a long term staffing plan to ensure they never have a 27 position staffing shortage happen again in the future."

Greens Candidate for Parkes Matt Parmeter said as a Dubbo resident "of course" he supported the push for a cancer centre.

"I personally support having a cancer centre and if elected will do all I can to push for the project," he said.

"It is difficult for Dubbo cancer patients who now have to travel to either Orange, Newcastle or Sydney to access specialist services."

Mr Parmeter said it would be a huge benefit for residents of Dubbo who had cancer but would also be a significant benefit for those further west.

However while she said she thinks "it would be nice" to get the centre in Dubbo, Ms Stewart said she also had concerns about the lack of accommodation for patients coming to Dubbo, and had issue with how they would reach it.

The conflicting information about the cost of the centre was another concern.

"I've heard 12 different amounts about what the shortfall is and what the total cost is going to be," she said.

"The other reason I'm not putting $25 million on the table is I'm certainly not a minister. Hopefully one day, but at this stage I'm not and that's the sort of announcement that you would expect to come from a minister."

To date around 12,000 signatures have been collected calling for a cancer centre to be established at Dubbo Hospital.
