A campaign is ongoing for a memorial of William Ferguson, an Indigenous rights activist and supporter, pamphleteer, shearer and trade union official.
He founded the Aborigines' Progressive Association in Dubbo on June 27, 1937, drafted farsighted resolutions, lobbied government for Indigenous citizen rights and organised a day of mourning conference in Sydney on January 26, 1938 - the 150th anniversary of the landing of the First Fleet in Australia.
At the May ordinary meeting of Western Plains Regional Council, administrator Michael Kneipp approved a proposal to erect the statue in the Church Street rotunda precinct.
Aboriginal elder Rod Towney is among those campaigning to raise $65,000 to construct the statue.
Mr Towney said it was going to be good, not just for Dubbo, but for all of Australia.
"Around the country we have statues of many many men, like former prime ministers, but we don't see many monuments for Aboriginal people who've done their part for the country," Mr Towney said.
Despite his achievements, Mr Towney said not many people knew of Mr Ferguson's contributions to history.
Mr Towney said the plaque at the bottom of the statue would be informative for the public, who would then be able to do further research to find out more.
"At the time there was a lot of ill feeling toward Aboriginal people. Because of what he did it made life better for us today," Mr Towney said.
"He's the Martin Luther King of Australia, particularly in this area at least. That's how he's remembered, especially to us elders."
Campaigning for the $65,000 to have Brett Garling construct the monument officially began a month ago, and Mr Towney said it was going "alright".
"I'm still in the process of writing letters to the federal and state government. We've had a lot of promises but you'll have to watch this space."
