After drifting from $7 to $12 late in betting, Music Magnate took out the race, with winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy saying it was run at the fastest tempo he could remember for a race at the distance.
Despite the clear on-pace bias evident at Doomben on Saturday, the result was set up for the Bjorn Baker-trained gelding, with Stradbroke favourite Azkadellia running-on from last for second.
But Brisbane-based professional punter McLeod has questioned whether any of the 10,000 field could go on to win the Stradbroke.
“I thought the Doomben 10,000 was run just ridiculously fast and they just overdid it.
“I didn’t really like Music Magnate, I thought he was outclassed but he finished up in the right spot and was the right horse at the right time.
“I don’t think he can win the Stradbroke - I don’t think any of those horses can win the Stradbroke.
“Azkadellia is one that can improve. She had to face the breeze very quickly and just peaked on her run but the rest of them won’t get the 1400m.”
McLeod also explained why he wasn’t keen to follow Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) Mackintosh heading into the Queensland Derby.
Hear why in his video below, where he wraps up the key elements of both races from Doomben on Saturday.
We move into week 3 of the Brisbane Carnival $250,000 Tournaments and the $100,000 is STILL up for grabs!
