HE always knew Squared would be one to watch, but Mudgee-based trainer Mark Milton said he was surprised by just how dominant the two-year-old filly was at Dubbo Turf Club on Sunday.

Owned and bred by Wellington's Neil Johnson, Squared (Jake Pracey-Holmes, $1.90 favourite) was in fine form in the Tools Down Tradies Raceday is Coming 2YO Handicap (1200 metres) on Sunday afternoon, pulling away from the field to win by nearly six lengths from the Dar Lunn-trained Caliente D'oro (Mathew Cahill, 4.00) with Curious As (Kody Nestor, $15) scraping in for third.
"Very happy with her actually, to win like that, a pretty dominant win," Milton said.
"Ran very well, she's an improving sort of a horse and she'll get better with experience - she's still quite green in racing matters."
Squared shot out of the gates to settle at the front early in the race, and was a length ahead of Kiawanda (Anthony Cavallo, $17) going into the home turn.
Coming into the home straight Caliente D'oro moved up wide to pass Kiawanda on the inside as Itsa Joke moved out into the clear.
Itsa Joke and Curious As surged up to pass Kiawanda as Squared pulled away to cross the line 5.8 lengths ahead of Caliente D'oro, with Curious As pipping Itsa Joke another two lengths back in a photo finish for third.
"She was always going to be in the first couple during the race on her speed," Milton said.
"She's got good speed out of the gates and that sort of thing so she was always going to be there.
"I was probably surprised how dominantly she won it but in saying that she's a horse that has got a lot of ability so I hope she can keep progressing."
Later in the day Whinna Whiskey (Anthony Cavallo, 4.60) clinched a win in the Dubbo RSL Club Motel Resort Maiden Handicap (1400 metres), storming over the line just a one-tenth of a length ahead of Nic City (Adam Sewell, 10) with Raised to Duel (Jake Pracey-Holmes, 10) - Milton's other racer for the day - a length back in third.
It was another tight finish in the penultimate race of the day, with Blinkin Elle (Crystal Conning, 17) sneaking over one-tenth of a length ahead of Art 'N' Ollie (Leanne G Henry, 7.00) in the Dubbo RSL Club Sunset Bistro Benchmark 60 Handicap (1100 metres).
