Western Plains Regional Council, the name given to the amalgamated Dubbo City and Wellington councils, has divided opinions in the city.
Real Estate Institute NSW (REINSW)- Orana said by not including 'Dubbo' in the name the reputation of the city would diminish.
However, the Dubbo Ratepayers and Residents Association has given its support to the moniker, as it fits for both merged areas.
Mr Grant said he had no issue with calling the area Western Plains Regional Council.
"I'm more than happy with Western Plains Regional Council. I think the name itself is not an unfamiliar name we have the Western Plains Zoo, Western Plains Automotive, Western Plains health facilities, so it's not an uncommon name," he said.
"But I do understand the sentiment and the attachment to retaining Dubbo to the identity given its 100 plus years of age so that will be something that the administrator will consult with."
The area has attachments to words like 'Orana' and 'Macquarie', Mr Grant said.
"There's plenty of examples that have been floated to me - Dubbo Macquarie Regional Council is probably one that sounds pretty good because Wellington was originally the Macquarie Council. That may be a nice connected name," he said.
"But ultimately it's not my decision, it's the community's decision and I'll be happy with what they select."
If more people came forward, Mr Kneipp said he would take the issue further.
"If people wanted to come up with other suggestions I'm open to it. It's not my decision but if there's a consensus I'm happy to put it forward."
A spokesperson for Minister for Local Government Paul Toole said the name was based on input through the council boundary review process and the characteristics of each area.
"Council names can be easily changed, as happened in a number of cases following council mergers in 2004. Councils may apply to the NSW government to change the council name," the spokesperson said.
