Somewhere between West Side Story and Mad Max, Walter Hill's dreamlike 1979 action movie follows a street gang on a nocturnal journey across New York City, battling other gangs who dress like experimental theatre troupes (the inspiration, believe it or not, was the work of the ancient Greek historian Xenophon). THE 5000 FINGERS OF DR T (89 minutes) PG

One of the weirdest family entertainments of all time, Roy Rowland's inspired 1953 musical fantasy plunges the young hero (Tommy Rettig) into an expressionist netherworld ruled by his crazed piano teacher Dr Terwillker (Hans Conreid), the inspiration for The Simpsons' Sideshow Bob. The screenplay and songs were co-written by none other than Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr Seuss. Digitally projected. Astor, tomorrow, 2pm.

THE AMERICAN DREAMER (90 minutes) Unrated 18+

Hippie superstar Dennis Hopper strips himself naked, metaphorically and literally, in this seemingly candid portrait made by the screenwriter L. M. Kit Carson and the photographer Lawrence Schiller in 1971. Largely unseen for decades, it's a fascinating artefact of its era – and, if Schiller is to be believed, a forerunner to mockumentaries such as Casey Affleck's I'm Still Here. Digitally projected. FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS (110 minutes) PG

Stephen Frears' expert confection finds both comedy and pathos in the figure of a would-be opera singer with the drive but not the gift, inspired by the same true story as Xavier Giannoli's recent Marguerite. Meryl Streep is typically excellent in the lead, while the underestimated Hugh Grant has his best role in years as her dishonest yet devoted spouse. Selected.
