Opening this Thursday, May 5 at 6pm, Bird Lord features mainly Australian birds, along with a few imaginary species exploring new patterns and colours.
Mr Smith said he had been painting human portraits, before being drawn to the character and personality of birds after seeing Leila Jeffreys’ bird photographs.
“I’ve definitely enjoyed capturing their look and their personality,” he said.
“They’re just really vibrant, really textured, slightly abstract, almost ambiguous.”
Birds were some of Mr Smith’s first subjects when he and his wife left the city for Mudgee in 2012, to get out of the rat race and have more time to pursue art and hobbies.
With time, space and inspiration, the couple have focused on their creativity and Mr Smith has now put together his first themed body of work in the Bird Lord collection.
Bird Lord will be his first solo show, after exhibiting his work at Artisan on Lewis, the Butcher Shop Cafe, Mudgee Library, and the Arts Council’s annual exhibition.
