A big crowd was on hand at Dawson Park on Sunday night to witness the culmination to a week of chasing that was not for the faint-hearted, with four meetings for a week testing the resolve of even the most hardened punters.
Popular Cowra trainers Pamela and Paul Braddon took out the feature event of the carnival when All A Blaze upstaged Brad Hill Billy and Suzi Cargo in the Cosmic Rumble Gold Cup (516m).
Programming changes mean the Dubbo club would not host an Anzac carnival as such in 2017, with the current format replaced by two meetings run on the Fridays either side of the commemorative day.
Stiff said with Dubbo hosting so much TAB racing at the venue now, the task of running as many as four meetings in a week and up to eight in the entire month was getting too big.
"We won't be having a carnival as such next year. It will be Friday heats followed by finals a week later but I think the carnival we've just had is a good way to go out as far as that is concerned," he said.
"The quality of dogs we had racing here over the week was enormous, the racing was great, and there was a real good atmosphere around, especially on Sunday night for the finals. I don't think there's ever been a better meeting at Dubbo than that.
"Maybe if the meeting had started at 3.30-4pm we could have got a few more people there but we don't control that and our turnover, bar, canteen and gate was good so we're not complaining."
The fact that Golden Easter Egg runner-up Brad Hill Billy could only finish third in the Gold Cup only outlined the strength of the action on offer through the carnival, and Stiff said the future was positive for the sport at Dubbo.
"A terrific amount of work went into the carnival, and I have to thank the committee would made it happen for everything they did," he said.
"Fiona Cole, our secretary, did a mountain of work and she also looks after the grounds at the track and it looked superb.
"David Power, Rob Ingram and Jim Armstrong have been working on the track and it raced really well.
"The new sand we have there is safer and faster than the old stuff and the work those guys have done with the track had it racing really well for our biggest races of the year.
"We're about to sign a big sponsorship deal with Ladbrokes as well, easily the biggest in the history of the club, and that money we can put into prizemoney so everything is looking very positive for us."
