ORANGE Emus broke their Northparkes Oval hoodoo in spectacular fashion on Saturday afternoon, running in nine tries to one in a 54-point walloping of the Parkes Boars, to remain unbeaten on top of the Blowes Clothing Cup table.
Built on the back of a dominant set-piece Emus never looked seriously troubled by the Boars, scoring thrice and being awarded a penalty try in the opening period before crossing five more times in the second to claim a 59-5 victory - just their second win at the ground in the last half-decade.
In 2015’s corresponding game Parkes back-rower Dan Ryan’s 80th minute penalty goal broke Emus’ hearts, as a result stand-in skipper Nick Hughes-Clapp said his side was determined to stamp their authority this time around.
“We’d take that score-line any day of the week. We made a point of going over to Parkes with plenty of intensity, which we did,” Hughes-Clapp said.
“We’ve had a bit of trouble at this ground in the past, we’ve still won a couple but we haven’t actually put in a good performance here in a long time. It was nice to be able to do it this time.
“Scrums, line-outs, we were very happy with the set-piece. Our general patterns and game-play we were delighted with, we set ourselves a goal for lots of straight, hard running to make sure we got over the advantage line and we did it well.”
“That one try we let in, it was a bit of a lapse in concentration. It was a bit disappointing, but Parkes stuck in and had a dig right to the end so credit where it’s due in that respect.”
Nas Havealeta opened the scoring for Emus early in the piece, flopping over from close range.
Todd Freedman crossed not long after, finding a gap in Parkes’ line and diving over, before halfback Sam Green grabbed a five-pointer on debut..
Along with second-rower Sam McLean and centres Zac White and Lachie Harris, the 18-year-old No.9 was phenomenal in the win.
Having destroyed the hosts’ scrum for 40 minutes already, the breaking point finally came when Emus forced the Boars to collapse a five-metre scrum and were awarded a penalty try as a result.
Parkes prop Sam Denison was given 10 minutes in the sin bin as well, which turned into a send-off when we was shown a second yellow card 25 minutes into the second period thanks to a shoulder charge and mid-field kerfuffle.
Derek Thompson scored two tries in as many minutes just after half-time, while Harris, AJ Sykes and Jack Marchinton all scored in the second stanza as well.
Freedman landed seven of his nine attempts at goal, despite battling plenty of wind.
Making the win more impressive, Emus were without skipper Nigel Staniforth, Tom Goolagong, Andrew Cosgrove and Josh Ellice-Flint.
“I hadn’t actually thought about [the missing players]. Obviously they’re quality players, but the guys who came in did fantastically,” Hughes-Clapp said.
