The undefeated minor premiers, the A-Team, had their work cut out for them by the resurgent Floppy Discs with both teams trading points for the hour before landing on 8-8 at timecap.
The Floppies were playing the game of their season, with their stacking and cutting kicking into gear in the match that counts.
The A-team kept pace with them though, with their usual trademark long game swapped for a patient shorter game.
The last point could have gone either way but the A-team’s experience and patience shone through when Dylan Baker found a little space in the corner to score the point and take out the match 9-8.
In the other finals matches, the EMS Fliers proved too strong for the Blue Bombers 13-8, taking third place. The match had some strong plays from both teams, with the youngsters of the Blue team stepping up this year to move the disc around the pitch.
The battle for the wooden spoon was a cracker, with Geurie Ultimate Frisbee Club going up against the MonStars.
Both teams improved greatly through the season and it showed, with Geurie UFC off to a 5-2 start until MonStars stepped up the intensity to get back in the match. Ending at 8-8 at timecap, it was universe point again.
Despite some scrambling defence from the MonStars, Geurie UFC scored the point to take fifth place in the competition.
At the end-of-season function afterwards at the South Dubbo Tavern, four players were awarded with prizes for Most Improved: Harrison Montague, Aiden Shields, Clare Larkin and Connor Mitchell.
Best Spirit team award went to the MonStars.
“This has been one of our strongest comps yet with players from across the league creating some very fun matches throughout the season,” DUFF president Tim Hosking said.
“It was great to see a bunch of fresh new players in some of the teams and the continued improvement of the recently joined players. Things are looking very strong for Ultimate in Dubbo.
“We’d like to thank the South Dubbo Tavern for being an excellent competition sponsor and Dubbo City Council for their ongoing efforts to make high-quality sporting grounds available to all sports in our city.
“I look forward to the start of our Winter social ‘Kings and Queens’ competition in May which will run until the end of winter sports season in September when we’ll start our Spring Mixed Competition.”
New players are welcome, with matches at 6pm Monday nights at South Dubbo Oval.
