ORANGE City Lions stand-in skipper John Colgan is supremely confident of securing a win over Rhinos in Saturday’s Blowes Clothing Cup road trip to Dubbo, although he admitted his side might be without three of the best from their two season opening wins.
Outside centre Jake Davis, winger Taylor Smith and second-rower Ben Wright are all under an injury cloud leading into Saturday’s round three match-up with the returning Rhinos, after picking up niggles in last weekend’s 29-10 win over CSU Bathurst.
So much so, the Lions’ coaching staff will hold off naming their side until the 11th hour in a bid to give the trio every chance to prove their fitness.
“No, we haven’t named a side yet, we’re waiting on those injuries and if they improve,” Colgan said, before confirming his faith in the Lions’ depth should the trio be ruled out.
“We’ve got a great game plan in place so all that’s expected of any of us if to do our individual job and follow that plan (regardless of who takes the field).
“We don’t really know much about [Rhinos] at all. We know they performed really well in the GrainCorp Cup and they have a fantastic home ground which we assume they’ll be stronger at than on the road.
“We certainly won’t be taking them lightly.”
Orange City preceded last weekend’s win with a 44-point thumping of Parkes, while the Rhinos copped a hiding from CSU Bathurst in round one before enjoying a bye in round two.
Despite his side’s results Colgan said the Lions have been far from their best and will look to continue developing as a group and putting their new structures into place on Saturday.
That, and actually sticking some first-up tackles.
“We gave away too many easy metres last week so a big focus will be on tackling legs and bringing [Rhinos’] big boys to ground,” he said.
“Otherwise, starting well will be a big factor in getting a win. We’re striving to have good discipline early on to help us build pressure and get out match-winners into the game.
“We have plenty of firepower but we can’t use that defending so we’ll be looking to use our own ball well too.
“We’re working hard at training so it’d be nice to see us work to a more complete game plan this weekend.”
Orange City locks horns with Dubbo Rhinos, at Caltex Park, from 3.15pm.
