Catering for people of all ages and fitness levels, the Mud Run is now in its third year with interest continuing to grow.
Members of the dedicated committee were putting the finishing touches to the course on Friday afternoon, with mud pits, obstacles, monkey bars and rope climbs all featuring in the 10-kilometre circuit that starts and finishes at Ollie Robbins Oval.
“It keeps growing but we never know what to expect from year to year,” committee member Ann-Maree Chandler said.
“This year there’s about 1500 people registered, and the great thing about that is it’s 1500 people who are being encouraged to get out and be active.
“Our charter is to promote fitness and activity for people of all ages. We keep raising the bar with the course but it really is something that people of different ages and fitness levels can do.
“One of the the things we notice in the comments we get is that it doesn’t matter how fit you are, there are always people at the different obstacles and along the course encouraging them to keep going and helping.”
As well as the fitness benefits of participation, there is also a major benefit for the community as well.
The first two runnings of the event have helped contribute to the building of a fitness area at Sir Roden Cutler Park, and steps that lead into the Macquarie River, as well as the extension of the running/walking track around the Macquarie River into Regand Park.
Along with the Dubbo Stampede and Dubbo City Council, the committee has also contributed to plans for lighting to be installed along the Tracker Riley Cycleway.
“We have also helped with getting the big shelter installed at Ollie Robbins Oval,” Ms Chandler said.
“The profits made from each event go back to the community and help with things that are needed to get people active.
“A lot of people are put off fitness because they are intimidated by going to a gym, so the more facilities and equipment we can have around town the better.
“We’ll be asking for submissions from people as to where we should put this year’s money.
“Also, this year we’re donating $5 from every children’s registration to the Give Me 5 For Kids charity so that’s another community group that will benefit.”
