Mad Max: Fury Road is set to become the most successful Australian movie, after winning six Academy Awards and taking nearly $US400 million ($560 million) at the box office worldwide.

The post-apocalyptic film will bring home double the number of awards of the previous most successful Oscar-winning Australian film, The Piano.
Fury Road dazzled audiences worldwide with its barrage of arresting sound and visual effects.
At the awards in Los Angeles on Monday, Margaret Sixel won the Oscar for film editing for Fury Road, Jenny Beavan for costume design, Mark Mangini and David White for sound editing, Chris Jenkins, Gregg Rudloff and Ben Osmo for sound mixing and Colin Gibson and Lisa Thompson won for production design. The film also won for best make-up and hair styling.
It was also nominated for best picture, cinematography, best director and visual effects.
Released in May 2015, Mad Max: Fury Road, which was directed by George Miller, has more than recouped its $US150 million budget after strong box offices sales.
The film, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, has grossed $US377.6 million so far.
The financial spoils have been shared between Mr Miller's production company and Village Roadshow, Warner Bros and RatPac-Dune Entertainment, a venture between James Packer, Brett Ratner and Steve Mnuchin.
"It was a long time getting off the ground, then to think it's ended up with 10 Academy Award nominations and six wins. For Australia, it's an amazing night. We're so thrilled and proud," Village Roadshow co-chief executive Graham Burke told Fairfax Media.
Among the other highest-grossing Australian films were Mr Miller's Happy Feet and Crocodile Dundee.
Mr Burke said the Oscars for Fury Road highlighted to the world the talent that Australia had in film making and said he was keen for more Mad Max films.
Fury Road overcame a series of difficult circumstances just to get off the ground. There were several attempts to make the film in the early 2000s.
It was eventually made in the Namibian desert, Sydney's Fox Studios and Kennedy Miller Mitchell in Potts Point, Sydney.
Mad Max: Fury Road is the fourth film in the franchise's history. The first was released in 1979, directed by Mr Miller, starring Mel Gibson.
Fury Road was the first Mad Max film released in 30 years and was the first not starring Gibson.
